Meet The Band: Moron Says What?!

Moron Says What

Moron Says What?! chat to us about how they got started, the Auckland all ages scene and taking inspiration from ‘lolz.’

1. Tell us about how Moron Says What?! got started. Well there’s four of us. Alessandra (drums and vocals), Nicole (guitar, synth and vocals), Maria (bass) and Gabi (guitar and synth). We got started at school, you know one of those typical high school lunchtimes where its like ‘we have nothing to do, lets go to the music room’ and so the obsession began. And from that point on we’d break into music rooms and cover cliche teenage songs by Le Tigre and that ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ song by Wheatus, and the obsession of playing music didn’t stop.

2. How do you come up with ideas for new songs? Is it a shared songwriting process? It is a shared writing process yup. Basically someone comes up with a random riff, and we either like it or don’t. Then we all jam around it, or record it via sound recorder, and then take it home listen to it, come up with our own ideas, and then we come together and share, and eliminate what’s crap and what’s not. It’s a joint effort.

3. What are the biggest things that inspire you to make music? Our main inspiration comes in the form of ‘lolz’. Many lolz equals many songs. Whatever’s funny, whatever’s new, whatever new personal joke comes up amongst our friends becomes a new song. Our friends inspire us a lot. Hence the song ‘Nathalie, Touch Me There Again’ and ‘Gringo,’ which is about our friend Emma.  Food inspires us of course, just general everyday life I think.

4. Who are some of the artists you look up to? Right now we love young Auckland bands such as Bandicoot (who we love in more than one way), and then bands like Nevernudes and Fatangryman are pretty fricken awesome. The Auckland all ages scene right now is just pretty awesome. And other than here in New Zealand, personally I’d say Mika Miko and Marnie Stern.

5. What does the future hold in store for Moron Says What?!? Who knows really, keep an eye out I guess. Right now all I know about the future is we’re opening for Metronomy on the 6th of October which I am so excited about, and we’re playing Ladyfest in Wellington later this year in early December, which will be awesome. And in the meantime we’re doing a split 7-inch release through Evenex records with this Dinosauruxia, who are this awesome post electronic-y cute band from Finland. And also a split EP with Bandicoot later this year.

Moron Says What?! EP is out now. If you want to purchase a copy, email the band at moronsayswhat (at) gmail.com
