And The Most Played Song In New Zealand Is…
Since I’m responsible for writing the Chart Attack for Real Groove every week (the next one will be out tomorrow), paying attention to the charts and what gets played on the T.V and radio plays a pretty big part in what I do day to day. But airplay is a funny thing – sometimes it can help push the sales of a single and sometimes there maybe songs that get a lot of airplay but don’t sell. Or often artists may sell a lot but not get any airplay, which can hinder their performance on the charts. For those interested, Dean Scapolo talks a little about this in the introduction to The Complete New Zealand Music Charts 1966-2006.
Anyway, Radioscope have just released the 2009 end of year airplay data and the song with the most spins (9837, in this case) is Jason Mraz’s I’m Yours. Ugh. The reason for the songs success might have something to with the fact that it had an extra push since it was such a major crossover hit on the adult contemporary radio stations. Coming in second is Kings of Leon’s Use Somebody and Midnight Youth come in third with All On Our Own. Interestingly, Smashproof only come in at number four on the New Zealand artists most played list, despite staying at number one on the singles chart for 11 weeks.
