iTunes Not-So-Perfect Best of 2009 List

This is the closest you’re going to get to me mentioning a Best of 2009 list, but I recommend you take a closer look anyway. No one expected the iTunes New Zealand Best of 2009 list to be perfect but it probably couldn’t get any worse. Firstly, they ignore the fact that we’ve had the most interesting year for New Zealand hip-hop thus far (Smashproof, David Dallas, PNC) and choose instead to pick an album that is neither hip-hop or rap, in any regard whatsoever – thinking back to the fact that Fat Freddy’s Drop were awarded the Best Roots Album doesn’t seem so debatable now, does it? Also, the very recently released Flight of the Concords album takes home the award for best local alternative album while – get this – Ladi 6 gets a best of 2009 award for an album that actually came out in 2008. Can we all just sit back for a moment and think about who we’re paying for music these days?
