Considering they have the word ‘awesome’ in their band name, it’d be churlish not to kick off Awesome Feeling 5 with Wellington’s The Golden Awesome. Trading in straight-up shoegaze (My Bloody Valentine, Ride, etc), they combine the surging, layered guitars and soaring, ethereal vocals of that era with a driving rhythmic undercarriage – at this year’s Camp A Low Hum, they and Melbourne fellow travellers Lowtide cut through the chillwave mush with the urgency of their sound; ‘Astronomy’ clocks in under three minutes! While based in Wellington, they can claim some serious Dunedin musical pedigree with members of Cloudboy, Mink, and Mëstar (whose heavier tracks provide a useful reference point for The Golden Awesome’s sound). They’ve already released a cassingle via Rampant Runes, and are looking to release their debut album late 2011 via New York label M’lady’s, also home to the Brooklyn/Kiwi band Coasting.
From 2007, Real Groove magazine released four Awesome Feeling compilations, showcasing a diverse and exciting range of underground local talent. Real Groove may be gone, but we think there’s just as many exciting local acts worth a listen, so The Corner is putting out a fifth volume of Awesome Feeling with the support of Groove Guide. We’ll be revealing one new artist/track every weekday throughout May, and posting the entire compilation for download at the end of the month.
