Auckland duo Onesie (made up of Ary Jansen and Catherine Cumming) released their debut album Squirm early last month, and it’s a typically lo-fi and grungy affair which comes book-ended with two especially disheveled tracks, ‘Suds’ and the title track ‘Squirm’. Between the other songs on the album is the messy and moody ‘Eric and Dylan, a song which is possibly a reference to Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold of the Columbine High School massacre, but despite the association this track is still a whole lot of fun – check out the anti-schoolyard lyrics of “I’m allergic to school and all the other kids” for proof. After a couple of benefit shows, the band have also put together some money and are heading to the West Coast of the US for a bunch of shows which will see them hit Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland and San Francisco next month. From 2007, Real Groove magazine released four Awesome Feeling compilations, showcasing a diverse and exciting range of underground local talent. Real Groove may be gone, but we think there’s just as many exciting local acts worth a listen, so The Corner is putting out a fifth volume of Awesome Feeling with the support of Groove Guide. We’ll be revealing one new artist/track every weekday throughout May, and posting the entire compilation for download at the end of the month.
