Odd Future Dropped From Big Day Out Lineup?

UPDATE: Triple J and NME are reporting that Big Day Out promoter Ken West is organising a separate headline show for Odd Future in Auckland.

Despite any confirmation from Big Day Out organisers, GayNZ.com are reporting that Odd Future have been dropped from next year’s BDO lineup. Wellingtonian Calum Bennachie wrote a complaint to promoters of the event in reference to OF’s lyrics stating that they “increase the societal discourse against lgbt people, a discourse that encourages bullying and violence”.

via GayNZ.com:

Bennachie cc’d the email to a number of people, including the Chair of Auckland Council’s Parks and Heritage Forum Sandra Coney, who quickly found she agreed with the writer.

“I approached the CEO of Regional Facilities Auckland John Brockies with Calum’s concerns and my own having watched Youtube,” she says.

“After a discussion with BDO organisers this group will no longer be appearing in BDO in NZ.”

Brockie confirms this is the case and says the Council has an excellent relationship with the Big Day Out’s promoters.

”We passed on some concerns that had been expressed locally back to the Australian owners of Big Day Out and the outcome of the joint consideration of that was a change in line up for the event.” He says, adding, “We want all New Zealanders to have a fantastic time at Big Day Out.”

  1. If we censored all music that caused offence, we wouldn’t have a big day out after a while

  4. Fully understood the disallowing of Beenie man last year as he has incited genuine violence and hatred but this is just censorship. The fact that OFWGTA has an out Lesbian member of the crew lets people loud and clear this is offense for the sake of it and not intolerance?

  10. wow. Calum Bennachie has missed the point of Odd Future by a million miles.
his argument died back in the 20th Century.
i’d suggest he is after either publicity or has never actually listened to the music of the group.

    • To be honest I’m pretty sure most people excited about Odd Future have only watched the Yonkers + Fallon vids anyway so it’s a pretty level playing field
