In one short year All Seeing Hand have grown from impromptu turntable/drum jams, to a fully formed band with a following of dedicated fans that grows with every single performance. Renowned for their chaotic intense live shows, the band are currently a three piece with Alphabethead on both digital and analogue samples, Ben Knight on drums and percussion and Noel St Cosmos on vocals. With high profile slots at Camp A Low Hum and Borderline Festival, a debut album just released, and a nationwide tour under their belts already, it’s clear All Seeing Hand are one of the most intensely hardworking and artistically ambitious bands we have seen in a long time.
‘Geronimo’ is a track from their self-titled, self-released debut album. It was recorded before Noel St Cosmos joined the band so doesn’t offer the full experience of their live show but it does highlight the incredible rapport between Alphabethead’s sampling and Ben Knight’s drumming. Starting out with slow droning samples and metronomic drumming, and building up to an intense noise that infiltrates your head like a screwdriver, ‘Geronimo’ is the perfect way to kick off Awesome Feeling 6.
An All Seeing Hand show is a life changing experience; I have never seen a local band get an intense emotive response from a crowd quite like All Seeing Hand do. Any of the three members could easily consume your attention for the set alone, but the combination of the three creates an experience like no other. Alphabethead’s mindblowing droning sampling is the framework of the band – he performs like no other DJ and is an absolute genius on the decks, proving he’s one of the country’s best musicians. Ben Knight’s powerful and high energy drumming gives a frantic energy to the performance, which is exhausting just to watch, while the masked Noel St Cosmos’ avant-garde singing and hypnotic performance rounds the trio off. It is like some sort of primitive/ritualistic type experience complete with howling, screaming, and cult-like imagery.
Not content with having one of the best live shows and most interesting music in New Zealand at the moment, All Seeing Hand have incorporated visual arts into their experience, they’ve collaborated with Ruben deHaas, Erica Sklenars, Lance Ravenswood, Chris Connolly and Hannah Salmon on posters, album art and live projections.
If you haven’t seen All Seeing Hand yet, their show on May 11 at Mighty Mighty may be their best performance yet. St Cosmos, the masked frontman for the band, is making the ultimate sacrifice.
“The All Seeing Hand in collaboration with a group of visual artists will transform Mighty Mighty into a temple for beautiful noise. Come see the death of St Cosmos live on stage! See cult members go crazy! Hear music to tear your ears off to! Dance and howl to the ecstatic sounds of The All Seeing Hand”.
From 2007, Real Groove magazine released four Awesome Feeling compilations, showcasing a diverse and exciting range of underground local talent. The Corner decided to pick up on that for the fifth volume and we’re back again for round six. We’ll be revealing one new artist/track every weekday throughout May, and posting the entire compilation for download at the end of the month.
