Awesome Feeling 6: Sunken Seas ‘Paid Your Price’

Like fellow Awesome Feeling 6 peers The Shocking and Stunning, Wellington trio Sunken Seas are well versed in an economical approach, stretching the sonic capabilities of their respective musical onset to their limits and creating something enthralling and elevated from the modest settings. In the case of Sunken Seas, consisting of three former members of angular post-punk outfit Tiddabades, they augment their impact by letting guitars swell into some captivating musical pyrotechnics that recall Flying Nun heroes HDU or Hawkes Bay instrumentalists Jakob.

Sunken Seas formed in earlyish 2011 after Ryan Harte (bass/vocals), Luke Kavanagh (guitars/samples) and Craig Rattray (drums) craved a fresh approach from the orthodoxy that Tiddabades had become. The trio have released a pair of self-released singles; ‘High Rise’ and ‘Paid Your Price’ which will inevitably feature on their forthcoming full-length debut.

‘High Rise’ was one of the local highlights from last year; a beautifully formed instrumental rocker that effortlessly weaved ambient noise, shoegaze and psychedelia with a jaunty post-punk undertow; ripening and unfurling itself into a wall of psychedelic technicolour.

Follow-up single ‘Paid Your Price’ is a grittier, dingier slab of noise rock, swirling with amplifier feedback, brawling guitars and a touch of vocal action from Ryan Harte.

Bound to leave a sense of anticipation for their debut, Sunken Seas have also been pedaling the live circuit recently with The Shocking and Stunning and Melbourne lo-fi experimentalists Pioneers of Good Science. They also play ‘Not Another Showcase’ tomorrow night in Auckland.
