Here’s some reasons why we shouldn’t have included Thieves on Awesome Feeling 6. 1) Try Googling them – they’re definitely not the only band called Thieves, and I’m not sure if they actually realise that. 2) Once you do find them there’s virtually no information on them apart from an interview where Under The Radar calls them elusive – they tell us they’re “either Auckland’s best-kept secret or the city’s most poorly promoted band”. 3) We asked for a photo of them, were told they didn’t photograph that well and received that pic you’re looking at above with the note “you can imagine our school photos”. Perhaps we’re just doing it out of pity.
Jokes aside, there’s actually not much to complain about. Made up of Nich Cunningham, Jared Johanson (The Subliminals) and Kari Hammond (The Vietnam War, Mothers of Darkness, countless others), the trio have been around for a little while now, releasing a self-titled EP back in 2010 and a song amazingly titled ‘I’m Being Chased By The National Bank Horse’. Below, with ‘Soma Holiday’, we have a track that isn’t altogether different from what they’ve done before, playing ungarnished garage/rock/pop, partially in the same vein of the less-noisy FN guitar bands that get over-referenced but also with a welcome blast of adrenaline. This year they plan to release a follow-up EP and they say that their “comprehensive strategy for absolute market domination includes playing outside of Auckland and maybe even making a Myspace page”. Let’s hope they commit to at least two of those goals.
From 2007, Real Groove magazine released four Awesome Feeling compilations, showcasing a diverse and exciting range of underground local talent. The Corner decided to pick up on that for the fifth volume and we’re back again for round six. We’ll be revealing one new artist/track every weekday throughout May, and posting the entire compilation for download at the end of the month.
