Recently making it to the top of the Radioactive FM charts with his single ‘Heartbreak’, let us introduce Wellington via Hawkes Bay artist Dartel, who back in March released his debut EP Shoot For The Moon, and as the title suggests has him aiming for the highest, with a theme that centers around his come-up. It’s a familiar and crucial topic still highly present in hip-hop today, just not always one that is tackled quite so eloquently. But like his most obvious local counterpart David Dallas, here’s someone that you naturally feel like getting behind – and alongside 80HD Records’ Ben Walker, who produced everything on SFTM, he’s definitely off to an encouraging start.
It’s the complete attention to detail which is the rare aspect of all of this. From the approach to his music and production values, right down to his cover art visuals, promo shots and press kit (which is honestly brilliant and should serve as a leading example of how to do these things correct), links up on every social networking site, an actual official website, a YouTube page and a great Behind The Music series of write-ups over on the 80HD Tumblr. In an interview with Rip It Up, Dartel also emphasises how important this whole aesthetic is: “Ben and I have a clear understanding of how we want our music to be portrayed. We don’t believe in doing things in halves. Also, when you put so much effort into the music – you want it to be presented in a way that reflects that effort and the quality of the music.”
‘Been This Way’ closes out SFTM and we’re pretty happy to be able to offer it up as part of Awesome Feeling 6.
From 2007, Real Groove magazine released four Awesome Feeling compilations, showcasing a diverse and exciting range of underground local talent. The Corner decided to pick up on that for the fifth volume and we’re back again for round six. We’ll be revealing one new artist/track every weekday throughout May, and posting the entire compilation for download at the end of the month.
