Awesome Feeling 7: Caroles ‘Over Head’

Brought to you by The Corner and NZ On Air, Awesome Feeling 7 is an online event running through NZ Music Month 2013, culminating in the release of a free downloadable compilation of 20 New Zealand songs and the words written about them. Each weekday for 20 days we’ll post streaming+downloadable tracks from emerging local artists, accompanied by artist and track profiles authored by Corner contributors.

New Zealand music at its finest epitomises honesty, individuality and just a dip in the realm of weird, and the music that Caroles makes has all three of those traits exemplified by a relentless druggy drone, buzzsaw guitars and bratty vocals that really burn the band’s sound into your brain.

Originally formed in 2012 as the WEED GUYZ, Reuben Winter (previously in Bandicoot, Kitsunegari, FATANGRYMAN and now Totems) and Lawrence Goodwin (previously of Tied On Teeth and now CHEATS) added in third member Hugh Piesse (also of the shortlived Tied On Teeth) and renamed the band Caroles. They’ve just released a self-titled EP from which ‘Over Head’ is taken and have also been touring extensively throughout the top half of the country, including an appearance at Camp A Low Hum earlier this year.

‘Over Head’ was recorded live as part of 95bFM’s ‘In Session’ series – there are no overdubs, there are no stops and starts. This is Caroles in the element and it exudes so much youthful energy, yet also evokes equal parts of punk vitriol and stoner doom that I found it hard not to form an immediate reaction on first listening. That reaction was at first to sit up and listen, now it’s to try to not compulsively dance. Caroles are a band that make you listen. They have something to say – sometimes it’s banal, sometimes it’s urgent, but it is unequivocally worth listening to.
