Totems and Foxtrot

Brought to you by The Corner and NZ On Air, Awesome Feeling 7 is an online event running through NZ Music Month 2013, culminating in the release of a free downloadable compilation of 20 New Zealand songs and the words written about them. Each weekday for 20 days we’ll post streaming+downloadable tracks from emerging local artists, accompanied by artist and track profiles authored by Corner contributors.

For the uninitiated, swag kid Totems – a.k.a Reuben Winter, whose also 1/3 of AF7-profiled Caroles – makes big, bass heavy songs. He’s not one to hide his enjoyment of southern United States gangster rap/trap/boombap, and all the dionysian 4/20 sizzurp connotations that come with it.

On the other hand, Flo Wilson’s work as Foxtrot is somewhat more organic than her counterparts. It’s predominantly made up of her voice (depending on what iteration of Foxtrot you catch her performing as), moving from choral ecstasy to moments where the silence speaks as much as the melodies which gracefully rise and fall over each other.

That continues with ‘Overcast’, a song which incorporates Foxtrot’s hyped-up sense of space in the slow, gradual build up of simple percussion (is that pots and pans?). Her ethereal, tiptoeing vocals play nicely with the mechanical as Totems helms the movement of the song. It all comes together as he introduces synth that undulates in a way that makes you think, for the briefest of seconds, that you could be in zero gravity.
