Here’s What You Should Do This Weekend: 17 May

Instead of forcing you to sift through legions of events every weekend, we’ll just point out the really good ones. We’ll try keep this as brief as we can.

ONGOING TOURS: The All-Seeing HandSickest Smashes From Arson CityTiny RuinsBeastwars

Friday 17 May:

The Eversons @ Cassette 9 / 10pm / $10 (door), $5 (with bCard) [AKL]

w/ Trust Punks, Xuri Xruz

Considering how good a time it was last week was at Cassette, you should think about heading along tonight for the Eversons, who are apparently relocating to Auckland. Trust Punks just got featured on our Awesome Feeling comp, and Brad from Xuri Xruz is going to get hilariously drunk again. “Brought to you by the patron saint of local underground music: Beck’s beer.”

The All-Seeing Hand @ Puppies / 9pm / $10 (until 12am) [WGTN]

w/ Seth Frightening, WJ Hooker

The All-Seeing Tour continues, and if you’re in their hometown tonight you can witness them devour some live puppies.

…Otherwise, there’s this…

Glass Vaults @ Vogelmorn Hall / 7.30pm / $15 (waged), $5 (unwaged) [WGTN]

w/ poets Hera Lindsay Bird, Lee Posna; violinist Tristan Carter

An enterprising crew have vowed to curate “a roving series of events taking place in halls around Wellington,” and the first of these takes place at Vogelmorn Hall. The event is BYO and early, and it definitely looks like an interesting one.

Tommy Ill ‘Fearless Bueller’ Release @ Dux Live  / 9.15pm / $10 (tickets), $15 (door) [CHCH]

w/ Totems (AKL), Yvnalesca

To celebrate his new, free, album, Tommy Ill is heading south with Totems to promote it. Check out some other stuff on bandcamp, and he’s playing the next night in Auckland, if you’re around.

Saturday 18 May:

MUZAI: YEAR 4 @ Whammy/Wine Cellar5pm / $5 [AKL]

w/ HDSPNS, The Bemsha Swing, Society (WGTN), Deer Park, Mean Girls, Girls Pissing On Girls Pissing, God Bows To Math, Proton Beast

Last week’s Wellington show was by all accounts a good time, so if you’re around the K Road area you should head along and check the biggest local lineup we’ve seen since bStreet. Otherwise, this gig at Lucha featuring AF7’s It Hurts sounds pretty good too.

Tiny Ruins @ Puppies / 9pm / $10 [WGTN]

w/ French For Rabbits

Tiny Ruins, New Zealand’s sludgiest doom band, returns to Wellington with the famed crust act French For Rabbits to mutilate some corpses.

Salad Boys @ The Darkroom / 9pm / Free [CHCH]

w/ Zen Mantra, Villain

I know next to nothing about this gig. But of all the things I know next to nothing about, I can probably stamp a seal of approval on this one.

If this helpful listing isn’t helpful enough, you can check out these places for more stuff to do this weekend: Eventfinder / Cheese On Toast / Undertheradar / Mukuna / Groove Guide / The Fold
