Hamtown Smakdown Takes Place This Weekend

hamtown-smakdown-2014-1

Hamtown Smakdown has been running for over 10 years now and is stronger than ever. The punk and hardore festival is a highlight of the alternative music scene in New Zealand and this year features bands from Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Wellington and Melbourne.

There is a real dearth of live music the Waikato and it’s exciting to see so many taking a trek from Auckland or Wellington to come to a show that is well worth it. This year has a line up of 18 bands over two nights and you can check out some links to the artists below.

This year’s festival also highlights various niche subcultures associated with the underground music scene, incorporating DIY stalls to promote a dynamic array of creative endeavours. Among these stalls you’ll find vegan baking, traditional letter-pressing, exhibitions of visual and tattoo artists, anarchist and counter-cultural literature, a pop-up skate shop by Wrong Skate, on top of a swap meet for the sale and trade of second-hand music memorabilia.

The concert will be run at the Meteor on Victoria Street and the first bands are on at 7pm. This will be a weekend to remember.
