Auckland’s Team Cat Food have had an excellent year, releasing three fantastic EPs and a couple of singles that have demonstrated their wide-ranging creative abilities and influences. Originating from Wellington, the duo is comprised of Liam Kendall – who is also known for his Forest Spirits moniker – and Eammon Logan – the drummer from psyche-rock band Ghost Wave, and now producing solo under the name Lightening. They create beautiful, heavily house and garage influenced electronic music that ranges from gentle ambient compositions to more dance-floor friendly numbers, but always portrays their flair for emotional subtlety and aural poignancy.

Their most recent EP, Bag of Tracks, is an incredibly soulful affair that feels a bit more polished than previous releases and features some exquisite vocal samples. As with a lot of their music, there is a lovely sense of nostalgia lingering around every track and transporting the listener to a uniquely pleasant memory. Having said that, the production always sounds fresh and forward thinking, and that almost oxymoronic style is what really makes them stand out from the crowd. There seems to be a stronger emphasis on sampling with this record, but the way they blend the original instrumentation with the borrowed is particularly delicate and deceptive, resulting in music that proffers new rewards with each listen.

‘Just Once More’ is the pinnacle of the EP, and certainly the most club-ready track on there. With it’s jolted piano chords, classic high-hats and euphoric female vocal, it’s reminiscent of a subverted Ibiza anthem from a summer in a parallel universe – a universe where Mediterranean ravers need a bit more meat with their gravy.
