Deerhoof have let loose of a 11-track live album, including songs from across their career as well as a cover of the Ramones’ ‘Pinhead’. Head over to their official site to stream/download.

The Datsuns were announced as part of the February 2012 Rippon festival which hopefully means that we’ll also have another tour when they decide to head back our way. Details are still sketchy but the band are currently finishing up the recording of their new album in Sweden – until we hear more we’ve got ‘Gods Are Bored’, a new song from the album that you can stream or download for free below.

To celebrate the first anniversary of the release of Golden Axe’s Fantasy Footwork at Auckland’s High Seas gallery, Crystal Magic Records have posted the album online for free. Without any prior notice, Lil B’s mildly-controversial album I’m Gay, turned up on iTunes on Wednesday. Now, like 98% of the rest of his back catalogue, he’s let the album loose on Mediafire – find the link to download it via Twitter or spend up large on iTunes.

Yesterday, Lil’ Chief signees, The Eversons, released their latest video for ‘I’m A Conservative’,  the track that opens their self-titled EP. As it stands, the EP is still ‘name your price’, so you can head over there now to download it for as little as nothing at all. Cool Cult’s ‘Tomorrow’ might open with a quasi-Though Creature riff, but it’s quickly apparent that the young Auckland band’s sympathies lie with shoegaze. They’ve the guitar churn and vocal wash down, but where they depart from the blueprint is with how harsh and abrasive they make it sound – steel wool rather than candyfloss, recalling Japan’s mighty Xinlisupreme or Medicine’s ‘One More’. Their debut album, Try Crunch, was released via the tireless Muzai Records - with that label’s commitment to all ages shows a boon for the band – in March this year, and they’re writing new songs for a second album in early 2012. Guitarist Maté Vella will be away July-October, so catch them while you’ve got the chance – as well as lining up a Wellington show, they’re playing at the bFM Fancy New Band showcase at the Kings Arms on May 27th.

From 2007, Real Groove magazine released four Awesome Feeling compilations, showcasing a diverse and exciting range of underground local talent. Real Groove may be gone, but we think there’s just as many exciting local acts worth a listen, so The Corner is putting out a fifth volume of Awesome Feeling with the support of Groove Guide. We’ll be revealing one new artist/track every weekday throughout May, and posting the entire compilation for download at the end of the month.

Auckland’s Autumn Splendour have carved out a unique niche for themselves in the local music scene – too lean and light on their feet for the post-hardcore/garage-rock bands, and too raw and strident for the chillwave/twee axis. Their songs are scrappy sprints (‘Toby’ clocks in under two minutes) that recall Half Japanese and the Modern Lovers and the Ramones as well as slightly more esoteric sources like Thee Headcoatees and God Is My Co-Pilot; I wouldn’t have picked it myself, but a friend seeing them live for the first time compared their tantrum-y energy to Die! Die! Die! and the Coolies, with Natasha Cantwell’s vocals splitting the difference between urgent chants and caterwauling. They’ve released a vinyl-only 7″ EP, recorded to tape by ex-bassist Alex Bennett and mastered by Karl Stevens from the Drab Doo Riffs (another Auckland band with a focus on live shows, house parties and vinyl releases), and they’ve a new batch of songs they’re looking to demo/record – if you want to hear the new tracks debuted live, they’re playing Auckland’s Whammy Bar on the 27th of May, and Wellington’s Mighty Mighty on June 4th.

We had our hearts broken when young up-starts Bandicoot broke-up back in June, but we were quickly relieved to see the Muzai Records roster fill up with even better bands that have been emerging from the same scene. The Postures, Full Moon Fiasco, God Bows To Math and now Kitsunegari (possibly named after the X-Files episode of the same name), who feature ex-Bandicoot and current People People and Cannibal Faggots member Reuben Winter as well as Eddie Crawshaw (People People), Jessica Dew (FATANGRYMAN) and Taylor Groves. The band just released their debut EP Alles Gute Zum Geburtstag oder Herzlichen Gluckenwunsch (loosely translated to mean ‘happy birthday and best wishes’) as a free download. There’s elements of Shellac all over it — especially on highlight Beach — but the band also say they were influenced by Slint, Smashing Pumpkins and Mastodon. They also play two shows early next month; check out the dates for them when you download the EP below.
