U2 and Jay-Z
Mount Smart Stadium, Auckland
Friday November 26

Mid-way through U2′s set on Friday (the second of two shows they played), Bono paused to list all the visits that U2 has made to New Zealand. ’84, ’89, ’93, ’06, ’10. It’s been a romance with this country, he said. And now, “it’s time to go all the way.” Which is interesting, because when news came that their support act on the 360 tour down under would be Jay-Z, we felt anxious. This was going to be Jay-Z’s first time playing in New Zealand in his fourteen year career, and even though it wouldn’t be the main reason why these two were such an odd combination, the differences between the two acts and their audiences were clearly worlds apart.

Jay-Z’s debatable decisions to step outside of his (and his audiences idea of his) comfort zone have never worked well. His collabs with Chris Martin, Mr. Hudson and John Mayer, his mash-up album with Linkin Park (which we’ll get to in a minute) and the terrible Haiti telethon song with Rihanna and Bono are a few examples. So yeah, the need for a solo show was voiced far and wide and Jay-Z had to prove that despite the lack of stage theatrics that U2 would later toy with, he would have to do this thing the old-fashioned way. It was a weird intersection of his fame and his position on this tour, especially considering that he’s just come off a huge co-headlining stadium tour of Detroit and New York with Eminem.

He walked on stage to ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ before his nine-piece band lead him into a list of Blueprint 3 singles (‘Run This Town’, ‘On To The Next One’, ‘D.O.A’), greatest hits (’99 Problems’, ‘Dirt Off Your Shoulder’, ‘Big Pimpin”) and a few songs for his most loyal (the riotous ‘Takeover’, ‘U Don’t Know’ and ‘PSA’). But perhaps he was also catering to the audience that wasn’t really there to see him. He closed his 55 minute set with the unthinkable Linkin Park mash-up of ‘Numb/Encore’, which felt like a dull and cringeworthy end to a set which was otherwise remarkable. And apart from bringing Memphis Bleek along, he played his set without the guests that he was used to, picking songs that were events in their own right (like the dazzling ‘Empire State of Mind’) even if the set was sans tracks like ‘Hard Knock Life’ or anything from Reasonable Doubt.

It was the year’s biggest show and it came at arguably the worst week the country has seen all year. But the artists were well aware of it too. On Thursday’s show, Jay-Z asked for a minute’s silence for those lost at Pike River and on Friday he mentioned the miners again before playing ‘Young Forever’ – coincidentally, a song that he used last year to pay tribute to the victims of 9/11 when he played on the eighth anniversary of the disaster at Madison Square Garden. Later in the evening, U2 dedicated ‘One Tree Hill’ to those lost in the tragedy and listed the names of all 29 on the huge screens that hung from the top of the stage.

However, this wasn’t a memorial but rather a celebration, and the biggest moments of the evening all belonged to the headliner. The chilling feeling as the lights shut off and the first bars of ‘Beautiful Day’ began to ring; the aggressiveness of ‘Elevation’ and ‘Vertigo’; Bono dedicating ‘Angel of Harlem’ to Beyonce. With the help of the claw-like stage, every song was an experience, often emphasised by the storylines explored on the enormous screens. Their classics brought the masses in the stands to their feet, singing along to ‘Mysterious Ways’, ‘One’ and ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ before the band slowed it back down for ‘Walk On’ and their set closer ‘Moment of Surrender’. When it was time to go home, the band had played for over two hours. And it was hard to feel jaded about anything after that.

Rumours were rife yesterday as word got around that (gasp) Beyonce would be accompanying Jay-Z to New Zealand when he plays here with U2 on Thursday and Friday this week. Isaac Likes seems to have kicked off the whole thing with a “source” of his at Universal Music confirming that they would both be making the trip down under before 3 News even hopped on the damn thing. The only problem? According to her official website, Bey’s on promo duty stateside throughout the week, with interviews scheduled on The View, Nightline, Good Morning America and even ESPN. The lesson? Don’t believe everything you read people. Hey, at least we don’t have to put up with hearing this, right…

By now you’ve probably heard that U2 are coming back to New Zealand; it was an announcement that was mostly impressive for the fact that ticket prices would begin at $39.90 (with general admission floor tickets for $99.90), a pretty odd concession in this day and age, especially when taking into consideration that it’s one of the biggest bands in the world playing. Then last night on a segment for The 7pm Project, it was announced that Jay-Z would be joining U2 on their trip down under. It’s big news for fans of the jiggaman, but that initial glee was also accompanied by confusion. Why exactly is Jay-Z playing with U2? So let’s take a look at why this whole thing isn’t going to work out like Bono probably hopes it will.

Here’s a guy that’s more successful and richer than every other rapper on the planet (dude banked $63 million in the last year), playing the benchwarmer for U2. He’s not just a rapper, but a rap mogul. He married Beyonce. You get the idea – the most obvious reason he simply shouldn’t be supporting U2 is that he’s no support act. He’s recently taken to headlining festivals, which included a newsworthy show at Glastonbury in 2008 and a much talked about performance at Coachella earlier this year. He’s released 11 number one albums in the US and his audience here is far and wide. It’s also his first time visiting New Zealand, which you would think would be a perfect chance to cash in on a headline show. Instead, he along with a nine-piece band will treat the crowd to a short one-hour set which will be like a bad case of blue balls for his fans in attendance. Is this just going to end up being a medley of as many hits that he can fit into an hour?

It’s easily the oddest line-up we’ve had since, um, U2 played with Kanye West back in 2006 during the groups last tour. But it isn’t the first time that Jay-Z has played with the band before; last year he joined them on stage for a rendition of Sunday Bloody Sunday (watch it below), when U2 played a free show in commemoration of the fall of the Berlin Wall and in January he teamed up with them again when they worked together on Stranded (Haiti Mon Amour), a song featuring Rihanna which they performed on the Hope For Haiti telethon. But unlike those one-off performances, this is a tour which will see Jay-Z — arguably the more important act to some people — be made to play a shorter set to a chunk of the crowd that isn’t there to see the guy. This barely adds up. So how about a separate Jay-Z headlining show? And if it’s not asking too much, can we maybe get a Beyonce sideshow too?

Suddenly, that “I’ll crush Elvis in his blue suede shoes” line doesn’t sound so arrogant. It’s by no means an easy achievement and the number itself surpasses his first week sales of ‘The Blueprint’ in 2001 which made 427,000.

Elsewhere, Raekwon’s ‘Only Built For Cuban Linx II’ came in at number four on the chart with 68,000 sold. The Beatles also hit the chart hard with their recently released remastered catalogue. They moved a combined 626,000 of their albums since their re-release on 9/9/09. The biggest seller was ‘Abbey Road’ which clocked in with 89,000 copies sold. Since Soundscan was introduced in 1991 to calculate album sales, The Beatles have never sold less than 1 million albums per year.

The New Zealand albums chart was also shook up by the group who took up 13 places on the top 40. The highest seller in NZ was also ‘Abbey Road,’ which landed at number eight. Expect them to continue dominating next weeks charts.

Raekwon – Sonny’s Missing

Only Built For Cuban Linx II (2009)

This album just keeps getting better. I can’t say that any one track stands out, but ‘Sonny’s Missing’ features not only a favourite Pete Rock beat of mine (it was also used in PR’s last album, NY’s Finest), but it has The Chef over the top adding that gritty New York street-level mobster narrative. Now that’s a recipe for a standout track. Ever since ‘Sneakers’ off of Rae’s otherwise pedestrian Immobilarity (1999) the team has provided the knock.

Jay-Z – So Ambitious

Blueprint 3 (2009)

Last summer Pharrell gave us ‘Announcement’ with Common on U.M.C; and this feels like it’s derived from the same batch of beats. But besides the new Clipse project, and this track, where the fuck has Pharrell been? Well he’s working on the KOL remix album, working with Snoop and Shakira and inked a new partnership with Cornerstone, the company who organised Pharrell, Santigold and Julian Casablancas to collaborate and move shit loads of shoes. Meanwhile, Jay-Z’s talking about his haters, and, getting older.

Mayer Hawthorne – The Ill’s

A Strange Arrangement (2009)

I fell in love with the new vintage-soul sound when a friend introduced me to Mayer Hawthorne at the top of this year. The song was ‘Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out’ and it seemed to get everyone hooked. Somehow Hawthorne has crossed over to embrace the hip hop community while still appealing to the older generation. Maybe it’s the fact that he’s signed to Stones Throw, or maybe it’s due to his music being really good. You decide. ‘The Ill’s’ is the more upbeat offering on his debut and makes you wanna hit up your local swing dance class. Have a listen…..

Fabolous – Lullaby

Loso’s Way (2009)

Fab always sounds best over these Street Fam beats (such as that on Tha Carter 3). This track is the middle road to Jay and Rae’s above, that over-engineered sound with that gangster talk and commercial appeal. People have talked of his underrated flow and I’d agree that he does throw in some good lines from time to time. “I’m with a model chick Tyra thick, Heidi’s height, body suit, Spidey tight”. For the most part, especially on this track, his demeanour and authoratative presence on a track keep him relevant, along with his image etc. Straight gangster shit.

Ohio Players – The Funky Worm

Pleasures (1973)

Besides being one of the most sampled songs of all time, Funky Worm formed the backbone and sound of West Coast gangsta rap in the late 80′s and early 90′s. There is a list of over 50 artists that have used parts of the track, but here a few that you may be familiar with.

Snoop Doggy Dog – Serial Killa, Xzibit – Shroomz, Kriss Kross – Jump, Dr. Dre – Chronic Intro, Dj Jazzy & The Fresh Prince – Boom Shake The Room, Redman – Cosmic Slop, Beastie Boys – Funky Boss, De La Soul – Me, Myself & I, Public Enemy – I Stand Accused, NWA – Dopeman, NWA – Gangsta Gangsta. The list goes on.

Classic Pete Rock Remixes – 1 of 5

Don’t get too excited, despite what these posters tell you, Jay-Z’s long awaited ‘Blueprint 3′ is not coming out tomorrow. I mean, if you really wanted to hear it, you could, y’know? The actual release date, you ask? Monday September 14 in New Zealand and as if you didn’t already know, September 11 in the US.
